“Sheer brilliance—at once exuberant and heart-rending.” So wrote
Tony-award winning composer/lyricist Maury Yeston about the song “Tennis”
from the new musical The Enchanted Cottage, calling it “a duet unlike any other in the
musical theater canon.” And that’s only one song. Wait till you hear the
rest.
Open the door of The Enchanted
Cottage, and you’ll find a place where the grim aftermath of war can
blossom into exhilarating romance, where unexpected miracles can—and
do—happen, where despair and heartbreak are redeemed
by the transformative power of love.
You can find The
Enchanted Cottage at The New York Musical Theatre Festival, the
first-of-its-kind festival that will present 67 events, including 31 premiering
musicals and 14 concerts over 21 days. A concert reading of this thrilling new
musical, written by the award-winning team of Thomas Edward West (book), Kim
Oler (music) and Alison Hubbard (lyrics) will be performed twice at the
45th Street
Theatre on Monday, September 27 at 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, September 30, also
at 4:30 p.m.
The reading of The Enchanted Cottage is directed by Peter Flynn, with musical
direction by Mark Goodman, and features a cast of some of Broadway’s best,
including Andrea Burns, Willy Falk, Annie Golden, Joseph Kolinsky, Barbara
Marineau, Rex Hays, Steve Routman, Rose McGuire and Jeff Brooks.
The Enchanted Cottage received the 2003 Jerry Bock Award and the
2002 BMI Jerry Harrington Award, and was featured in the 2002 NAMT Festival of
New Musicals in
New York
, starring Michael Hayden and Emily Skinner. The writers have also won the
Richard Rodgers award and received a grant from the Lila Acheson Wallace Readers
Digest Fund for their original musical Class Clown, produced at the Promenade Theatre in NYC and by the
Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. The
Enchanted Cottage is based upon the 1921 comic romance by Sir Arthur Wing
Pinero, which was also made into a much-loved film in 1945 starring Robert Young
and Dorothy McGuire.
